On his inaugural visit to Maharashtra as Chief Justice of India, Justice Bhushan Ramkrushan Gavai voiced disappointment over protocol lapses. He emphasised the need for equal respect among democracy’s three pillars, highlighting the absence of the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Mumbai Police Commissioner as a concerning issue warranting reflection.
I’m a bit concerned about a small issue in the Mumbai Police Department, especially with Commissioner Deven Tripurari Sharan Bharti, who’s in charge of law, order, and VIP protocol in the city. As the head cop, you’d expect him to be super strict about protocol, like it’s second nature. But it seems like Justice Gavai’s old friend from the Mumbai High Court, Mr. Bharti, might be treating protocol like it’s no big deal, with a casual shrug. Don’t get me wrong, though—he’s usually great at following protocol! For example, he reportedly suspended Senior Inspector Ravinder Katkar from Worli Police Station for a tiny mistake on a charge sheet, supposedly on Bharti’s strict orders, even though the BNSS, 2023, doesn’t mention such a rule. Quite a show, right?
I’m sure Shri Deven Tripurari Sharan Bharti will sort out this small protocol issue easily, just like he’s handled bigger problems before. So, the Maharashtra IPS folks shouldn’t worry about this tiny matter—let the Commissioner do his thing!
